PRURITUS – WHY BLAMING THE FOOD ISN’T A SOLUTION BUT CHANGING IT MIGHT BE!

Tuesday July 23rd at 8pm

Pruritus is a clinical sign and not a diagnosis or specific disease; which can have a multitude of causes such as parasites, infections and/or allergic skin diseases.

In addition, many diseases that are primarily non-pruritic (e.g. endocrinopathies) often become pruritic when the animal develops secondary bacterial or yeast infections.

Working up these cases necessitates a thorough dermatologic history and physical examination and successful treatment frequently depends on identification of the underlying cause.

Providing ideal nutrition for the normal structure and function of the skin via dietary changes should also be implemented to ensure the provision of optimal levels of the multitude of nutrients required for skin repair, barrier function and health.

Sarah Warren will take us through an ideal pruritus work up and discuss how diet can be part of the management of this often frustrating area of skin disease.
