Cecilia Villaverde BVSc, PhD, DACVN, DECVCN
Synopsis: Hospitalised dogs and cats, especially those with critical illness, are prone to malnutrition due to a combination of decreased food intake and increased energy and nutrient needs, the latter especially concerning in patients with intestinal disease. Providing nutrition as soon as possible will help prevent this problem and result in a better outcome for our patients. In this webinar we will discuss how to develop a feeding plan, including: when to start, how to choose the best route of feeding, navigating diets, feeding schedule and monitoring.

13:45 – 14:45 BST – The diagnosis and treatment of congenital portosystemic shunts in dogs
Katie McCallum BVM&S PGCertSAM DipECVIM-CA AFHEA MRCVS
Synopsis: This webinar takes you through the common clinical presentations for dogs with both extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS) and intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (IHPSS). To diagnose a shunt, most dogs undergo haematological, biochemical and urinalysis testing followed by directed tests to assess for the presence of a shunt and/or the presence of hepatic encephalopathy (HE):- a bile acid stimulation test and/or ammonia measurement. Imaging modalities to assess for the presence of a shunt include abdominal ultrasound and CT angiography.
Medical management aims to reduce clinical signs of HE and can be used for long-term treatment or to stabilise a dog prior to surgery (which is associated with longer survival rates). Medical management consists of dietary manipulation, antibiotics and lactulose treatment. Surgical management of EHPSS tends to utilise gradual ligation devices (ameroid constrictors and cellophane banding techniques). Due to the high complication rate associated with these devices in dogs with IHPSS, recent techniques have involved hydraulic occluders and endovascular treatment with stent placement and thrombogenic coils.
